Need Couples Therapy in Long Beach?

If you’re searching for couples therapy in Long Beach, it’s often because something in your relationship feels unresolved. That might look like repeated arguments, emotional distance, or simply the sense that you’re no longer as connected as you once were.

It’s important to understand that these challenges are common—and they’re also highly workable with the right support.

Many couples wait until problems feel overwhelming before seeking therapy. By that point, communication patterns may be deeply ingrained, and frustration can be harder to unwind. Addressing issues earlier allows for more effective, less stressful progress.

You may benefit from couples therapy if you’re experiencing:

  • Recurring arguments that never fully resolve
  • Feeling unheard, dismissed, or misunderstood
  • Emotional disconnection or lack of intimacy
  • Trust issues, including infidelity or secrecy
  • Stress from parenting, career demands, or life transitions
  • Cultural, religious, or value-based differences

In therapy, we move beyond surface-level disagreements and explore what’s happening underneath. For example, a recurring argument about responsibilities may actually reflect deeper concerns about respect, support, or feeling valued. Identifying these underlying dynamics is key to meaningful change.

Dr. Crohn works with couples at every stage—from dating and engagement to long-term partnerships and marriage. Whether you’re facing a specific issue or simply want to improve your relationship, therapy provides a structured, supportive way to move forward.

You don’t have to keep having the same arguments. If you’re ready for clarity and real progress, take the next step.

Dr. Joel Crohn brings more than 30 years of experience in couples therapy, clinical psychology, and professional training. This depth allows him to quickly identify patterns that might otherwise take months to uncover.

A Clear, Structured Process

Therapy is not random or unstructured. Sessions are designed to build on each other, helping you move from identifying issues to actively resolving them. You’ll develop clear goals and track progress over time.

Balanced, Respectful Guidance

We do not take sides. Both partners are given equal attention and respect. The focus remains on improving the relationship dynamic, not assigning blame.

Dr. Crohn specializes in working with interfaith, interracial, and intercultural couples. These relationships often involve complex dynamics that require thoughtful, informed guidance.

Comprehensive Couples Therapy Services in Long Beach

Our couples therapy services are designed to address both immediate challenges and long-term relationship growth.

Communication Improvement

Many couples struggle not because they don’t talk, but because they don’t feel heard. Therapy helps you identify patterns such as interrupting, defensiveness, or avoidance.

For example, one partner may raise a concern, while the other becomes defensive or shuts down. This creates a cycle where neither person feels understood. We help break that cycle by teaching structured communication techniques that promote clarity and mutual respect.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict is a natural part of any relationship—but unresolved conflict can become damaging over time. We guide couples in turning repetitive arguments into productive conversations.

Instead of escalating or avoiding issues, you’ll learn how to address disagreements directly while maintaining emotional safety.

Rebuilding Trust

Trust can be damaged by infidelity, dishonesty, or emotional withdrawal. Rebuilding it requires more than time—it requires a clear, intentional process.

We help couples work through what happened, understand its impact, and create a path toward accountability and repair.

Strengthening Emotional Intimacy

Over time, couples may feel less connected, even if nothing “major” has happened. Therapy helps rebuild emotional closeness by improving understanding, empathy, and responsiveness.

Navigating Life Transitions

Changes such as career shifts, relocation, or becoming parents can create stress in a relationship. Therapy helps couples adapt together instead of growing apart.

Intercultural & Interfaith Support

Differences in background can enrich a relationship but also create tension. With specialized expertise in this area, Dr. Crohn helps couples navigate these differences constructively.

Preventative Relationship Care

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many couples use therapy to strengthen communication and deepen their connection before problems arise.

Common Relationship Challenges We Help Address in Long Beach

Relationships rarely break down overnight. More often, challenges develop gradually through repeated patterns and unmet needs.

We frequently help couples address:

  • Recurring arguments that follow the same pattern without resolution
  • Feeling unheard or misunderstood, even during important conversations
  • Emotional distance, where partners feel more like roommates than a couple
  • Trust issues, whether from a specific event or ongoing behaviors
  • Differences in communication styles, such as one partner avoiding conflict while the other pushes for it
  • Parenting disagreements that create tension and misalignment
  • External stress, including work pressure or financial concerns
  • Loss of intimacy, both emotional and physical

For example, one common pattern involves a “pursuer-withdrawer” dynamic. One partner seeks discussion and resolution, while the other avoids or shuts down. Over time, this creates frustration on both sides. Therapy helps identify and shift these patterns into healthier interactions.

Understanding these challenges is only the first step. Therapy provides the tools to actively change them.

Serving California for Over 30 Years – Experienced Couples Therapy You Can Rely On

Experience matters when working through complex relationship dynamics.

Dr. Joel Crohn has spent over three decades helping couples understand each other more deeply and build stronger relationships. In addition to his clinical work, he has taught couples therapy to other professionals and authored books that explore the nuances of relationships across cultural and emotional contexts.

His work with interfaith and intercultural couples is especially notable, offering insight into how differences can be navigated with respect and intention rather than conflict.

This combination of experience, research, and real-world application allows for a highly effective, grounded approach to therapy.

The longer patterns go unaddressed, the harder they become to change. Take action now while it still feels possible.

What to Do If You Notice Relationship Issues

If something feels off in your relationship, taking early action can make a meaningful difference.

1. Identify the Pattern

Pay attention to what keeps repeating. Is it the same argument? The same emotional reaction? Patterns provide important clues.

2. Communicate Thoughtfully

Focus on expressing your own experience rather than blaming your partner. For example, “I feel unheard” is more productive than “You never listen.”

3. Avoid Escalation

If conversations become heated, pause rather than pushing forward. Escalation often reinforces negative cycles.

4. Recognize What Isn’t Working

If you’ve tried to resolve issues on your own without success, it may be time for outside support.

5. Seek Professional Guidance Early

Couples therapy is most effective when patterns are addressed before they become deeply entrenched.

Patient Testimonials

Dr Mindy I have known for over a decade and her continuous care and professionalism is outstanding. Many times I came to see her feeling like I am at the end of my rope and she ALWAYS has an answer of how we can make things work with a different medication, a different solution and never gives up. I owe her so much for without these medications and her confidence and care I wouldn't be able to function and I am functioning very well now. Even though she moved out of town I still see her through Telehealth as she truly is the BEST!

JZ

Dr Mindy was a life saver for my son and our family. She was so attentive and compaSsionate. I felt like she put her heart and sole into treating my son. She is so up to date on the newest medications and techniques in psychiatry. She carefully listens and gained my sons trust and ours. I have sent several other friends and family members to her and they all had the same experience. A++++

SF

Dr. Mindy Werner-Crohn was a lifesaver. Not only is she most knowledgeable about the latest advances in psychopharmaceuticals and medical advances in psychiatry and psychology, she is also up to date on other treatments to help in a variety of situations. I found her honest, straightforward, and accessible as well as very friendly and helpful. She even went to bat for me when I had an issue with my insurance company. Her staff is professional and goes above and beyond what would be required to make any patient feel welcomed and well taken care of. I cannot recommend Dr. Werner-Crohn highly enough!

LR

Dr. Mindy has been tremendously helpful to our son first, and then to me, as I became a patient as well. Yes, she is expensive, but there are few things that are worth more than getting the best advice you can from an expert in the mental health field who is truly brilliant in so many ways. After seeing other psychiatrists, and getting a variety of diagnoses and mediocre advice, Dr. Mindy was able to very quickly help our son by seeing what his issues were and getting him on the proper medication which has actually helped him to feel better and function better in school and in general. She cares about her patients, listens to them, and advises them not only on mental health but also has given us advice about other areas such as when and where to get tutoring help and deciding when he is ready for independence like staying home alone and going to summer camp. She has even given us referrals regarding concerns about his nutrition and growth. If you are trying to navigate any mental health issues and getting overwhelmed by a lot of questionable advice, I highly recommend you go to see Dr. Mindy!

BR

Dr Mindy Warner Crohn is the most magnificent, spectacular, caring psychiatrist I have ever had the pleasure to work with. 10 years ago I was diagnosed bipolar. I will now be 63 this Saturday. It's been a 10 years of up-and-down of different medications and therapy. She never gave up. She was always my cheerleader. She is brilliant. She now practices up in Oakland, but I have worked with her for the last 7 years or so,since Covid via Zoom. I could have my dates askew; but the important thing is I am doing well and I owe it all to her. In addition, she set me up with a wonderful therapist Dr. Tracy Rosberg. Together they have really helped turn my life around. God bless them both.

LL

Shira is excellent. Knowledgeable, thoughtful, professional. Highly recommend!

MC

I am a client of Shira Crohn's and l can't recommend her enough! She is a thoughtful, compassionate and highly skilled practitioner. I have benefitted enormously from her guidance and care. If you want someone who will engage you and guide you in your journey, then Shira will partner with you to do just that.

SC

Shira is the best psychiatrist I've ever worked with. She is empathetic and kind, but not a dunce or a pushover either. We've talked about various aspects of my treatment, and she has worked with me to find the right combination that works (which we did!) She's just good people, not there to cram as many appointments in as possible, just to run off to golf or something. I couldn't recommend her more highly.
